There are basically two options to display the battles we have thought of so far, a fullscreen and a windowed one. Let me explain the differences:
Windowed:
This one will be displayed in a window, takes less space, you can still view the surrounding area of your character while battling. The screen might be dimmed a bit as to put the focus on the battle window. An advantage is that you can see who's around in case you need to "call for help".
Fullscreen:
Exact replica of the Earthbound battle screen.
We can also add an option where you can set the default view you want and toggle between them while battling, e.g. you select fullscreen and during a battle you'd like to see if anyone is around, just toggle it to windowed for a second, look around and toggle it back.
Please share your thoughts about this in this topic, we'd love to hear what you guys think!

Windowed by a country mile, but if there's an option in the matter, then who cares?

Just curious what people think about it, maybe they have some ideas that could make it better as well

When you say windowed, does that mean a window in the game, or a whole new window outside of the game?

I think it'd be easier if we saw like a mock up of the windowed mode but I'm voting for fullscreen.

Tough choice. i could see a couple different variations of windowed working. but at the same time, you'd have to consider, that by calling for help, you're taking a chance. It wouldn't be too interesting if you all ways new whether you'd be helped or not. What might be interesting is if the people near you in the overworld would see some indicator by your character that indicates they need help. Then let them have that option.

Basically a call for help in SVO would mean you 'open up' the battle. People are free to join (up to 4 characters total) the battle and help you defeat the enemy. No experience points will be given, the cash is split among the people in the battle.

I was going to say optioned between either at first, but sleez's idea is actually pretty cool. A command like Pray or Run Away that takes up a turn but for like 30 seconds allows anybody nearby to join in? Of course if you guys don't want to change it up I get it.

Sounds good to me. Just one question, though. How will battles be initiated? Collision? Mouse-click? Command?

Same way as in Earthbound (ambush, neutral & surprise respectively red, grey and green swirly things). For PvP we'll add battle invitations for low level areas while high level areas will probably be 'free for all'.
So by colliding with an enemy.
So by colliding with an enemy.

Could you set it up to where somewhere in the options menu you could decide if you wanted full screen or window

Well, I'm torn...
hmm...
Fullscreen original or windowed convenience....
...
I suppose Windowed would be better for an MMO, huh?
I want both, but Window if it comes to that.

I have no idea what to put here. Any ideas?

Re: A Battle System question for you
I'd go with windowed, but for example, make the screen zoom in a bit between the player and the foe (not all the way) and make them face each other (repeating their walking sprites).
And make sure you have the run option.
