With the Netgore engine almost all movement lag is gone (no more shakey, jumpy characters!). We've just tested by running around like madmen in the test client/server and I only saw 2 or 3 'jumps' in over 5 minutes.
So next version of SVO will almost be completely lag-free! This is a great thing to look forward to since the current SVO lag is pretty annoying. If you're an SVO Elite user go grab the client in the secret board and go see for yourself. |

Hey guys,
We've spent the last couple of days working together with the guy behind the Netgore engine to fix several bugs and it seems the engine is ready for a stress test. SVO Elite users will be given the chance to download the demogame client and hop onto our public server. The demogame looks awful and it's still in side-scroller mode at the moment but then again this is just going to be a stress test to see how much lag there is (and hopefully it'll be a lot less than the current SVO server!).
This is yet another milestone in the development of the new SVO version, elite users may expect more test versions in the near future, as for the normal people you will have to wait a bit longer or try to become SVO Elite (by donating, playing SVO, being active, ...).
The server could really use some more RAM (only has 512mb at the moment) so if you have DDR2 ram (a strip of 1gb for example) which you don't use and you want to get rid of it you can contact Skye and we'll see what we can do, otherwise a small donation would be appreciated so we can use it to buy more ram ourselves.
Stay tuned! |

For all you tech-savvy people out there, here's the upgrade in terms of soft- and hardware: Old server: CPU: 800Mhz RAM: 256mb DDR1 OS: Windows XP SP3 New server: CPU: 1.8Ghz RAM: 512mb DDR2 OS: Windows Server 2008 You might think that Windows server 2008 is somewhat overkill, you're probably right but I got a free license through college so I wanted to give it a try. All in all you guys won't notice any difference while playing but I've seen a dramatically increase of startup speed for the game server which is a good thing. Once we get going with the new Netgore engine we'll still run on the current server but the gameserver can also run on linux which means I can get it up and running on a linux server owned by a friend of mine which is in a datacenter. This would mean that the lag (and jumpy movement) will be reduced a lot. Darkfrost and I are still learning C# and OOP in general so it'll be a while before we can take full advantage of Netgore. We're going to keep the current SVO up and running but there won't be any updates for it. This also means people who are eligible for a custom sprite will have to wait a bit until the new SVO is released. As compensation for this people who donate $5 also get a free forwarding email address. If you know any people who are experienced programmers (preferably C# but any dot net language should do) send them our way, it'll speed up development a lot. Also a php programmer for the MySVO section of the website would be a fine addition to the team. |

A new NetGore (the engine we're using) version has been released a few days ago. Things are looking promising! The movement is pixelbased, so even more similarity to Earthbound! As stated before, there should be less lag while playing and you will be able to move the gamewindow around your screen. Darkfrost has begun to remake the interface and although it's just a start, it's looking good. It'll be a while before we can get the game decently playable but it'll definitely be an improvement considering the current live game! |

Patch Tuesday... Not! Hey we aren't Microsoft you know. We release patches whenever we think they're necessary and that's right about now. In the next 24 hours we're going to roll out Saturn Valley Online 0.5.01 which is a bugfix update that fixes several login issues introduced with the new account system. We've also spend a little bit of time working on MySVO integration in the forum and portal, but that's nowhere near complete yet, so stay tuned. Our aim for the next "big" update is to introduce a shop and equipment system that's 100% the same as the one in Earthbound. So that'll be another step closer to being an actual playable game. I've been secretly porting Earthbound to SVO as well, it's coming along nicely and you might be wandering around in Eagleland together with your friends sooner than you can say "Ok! desuka".. Note to Windows Vista / 7 users: If you're getting Error 53 when the updater launches please let us know in the Alpha Discussion board!
Note: If SVO doesn't close fast enough, the updater is going to try and download SVO.exe while the game is still running, this will result in the updater not being able to update the game, to resolve this, make sure SVO is closed and manually run SVO Updater (found in Start menu > Programs > Saturn Valley Online > SVO Updater)
